Holiday Mail for Heroes
For the past couple of weeks the students in Mrs. Leah Trahan's TAG class have been preparing holiday cards decorated with Christmas and winter themes. The cards however, are not headed to the North Pole with request for video games or new clothes, the letters are going to veterans, military families, and active-duty service members at hospitals and installations around the world. This holiday season the students in Mrs. Leah Trahan's TAG class worked on an art and writing assignment where they were challenged to write a letter to members of the military thanking them for their dedication and service to our country. This was done through a program called "Holiday Mail for Heroes," which is run by the American Red Cross. The outpouring of the students' thoughtfulness was amazing.
With many service members and veterans separated from their families this holiday season due to deployments and hospital stays, the American Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes program empowers people to "Give Something That Means Something" by sending a card of thanks and support to the members of the Armed Forces, veterans, and their families. This will provide a "touch of home" for troops during the holiday season.
Below are scanned pictures of the students' original art (most students used crayons, markers, oil pastels, or chalk pastels). I scanned the art on my home computer and sent them to a local copy services store in town. They helped me turn the students' art work into holiday cards. Once the cards were printed the students wrote letters and thank you notes to our heroes using their very own custom made holiday card! Scroll down to see pictures of the actual cards and student letters.
